Deadline reports Paramount’s R-rated film reboot of the hit ’90s series Baywatch opened to $1.25 million in Wednesday night previews at the domestic box office.
Seth Gordon’s take on the series about lifeguards on the beaches of California has been widely panned by critics with the overall consensus being that the film lack’s the original series’ charm as it delivers an abundance of raunchy jokes on top of a rudimentary plot. The film which opened a day early ahead of Memorial day weekend is expected to take 40-million plus in its opening weekend.
In Baywatch, Zac Efron stars as Matt Brody, an Olympic gold medalist hired on to help restore the Baywatch brand. Brody finds himself in over his head when he and the Lieutenant of the LA County Lifeguards Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as well as the lifeguards of Baywatch team up against the villainous oil tycoon Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) who is threatening the future of the bay.
The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jon Bass, Priyanka Chopra, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Pamela Anderson, and David Hasselhoff. Here’s the official synopsis:
BAYWATCH follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Zac Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
Baywatch is now playing.
