The Hollywood Reporter has learned Disney+ is developing a Beauty and the Beast prequel series starring Luke Evans and Josh Gad.

In 2017, Disney released a live-action remake of the animated classic Beauty and the Beast, which earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This live-action retelling of the classic story featured a star-studded cast that included Luke Evans as the villainous Gaston and Josh Gad as his loyal sidekick Le Fou.

Now, Luke Evans and Josh Gad will reprise their respective roles in a Beauty and the Beast limited series for Disney+ that focuses on the origins of the notorious duo. The Disney+ prequel series will be a six-episode musical event, with The Hollywood Reporter sources saying the project will be set well before the events of the Beauty and the Beast remake while also expanding on the universe.

Once Upon a Time series creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will serve as showrunners alongside Josh Gad while Luke Evans will join all three as executive producers. All of the scripts for Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series will be penned by Eddy Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, and Josh Gad.

Composer Alan Menken, who provided the score for Beauty and the Beast and the 2017 remake, is in talks to return for the Disney+ prequel. While no stars from the Beauty and the Beast remake are attached to the prequel series, THR sources say there is a possibility that some of Josh Gad and Luke Evans’ former co-stars could appear as guest stars.

Here is the official synopsis for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast remake:

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle.
