Birds of Prey actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell reveals that she became a fan of Black Canary from the video game Injustice 2.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell appeared at 2019’s CCXP Brazil where she promoted Birds of Prey alongside her fellow co-stars. The actress reflected on playing Black Canary and expressed how she became such a fan of the character, particularly from playing Injustice 2.

Here’s what Jurnee Smollett-Bell had to say about how Injustice 2 made her a fan of Black Canary:

“I mean for me, it’s such an honor to be bringing Black Canary to film, you know? Black Canary, she’s such a legendary character, and I became a fan of her from Injustice 2. And it’s been amazing to work with these rockstar women, and feel the sisterhood that we have, and we all became so close too. It’s been a dream. It’s such a dream.”

Some fans have criticized the costume design for the characters featured in Birds of Prey, with some wishing that the production went for costumes that were more comic book-accurate. Hopefully, the finished product showcases to audiences that these different designs for the cast of Birds of Prey will work to the film’s advantage – particularly in the case for Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary.

“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
