Earlier in the decade, Sony Pictures had huge plans to expand its Amazing Spider-Man franchise beyond its first two installments that starred Academy Award-nominee Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker following Sam Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Plans included numerous spinoff films centered on much of Spider-Man’s villains including the Sinister Six and a standalone Black Cat movie.
While promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home, producer Amy Pascal revealed that there is still an interest in a standalone movie for Black Cat AKA Felicia Hardy:
“That’s a good question. I like Black Cat a lot, I think she is a really great character. We had her a little bit in the Amazing [Spider-Man] movie, but she’s kind of that character that we didn’t really turn into the Black Cat yet. I think that’s a really great character.”
Felicity Jones played Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in a small role. The character never became Black Cat in the film and ultimately was abandoned along with Sony’s plans for a Sinister Six movie that was set to have Drew Goddard at the helm.
Anne Hathaway was also Sam Raimi’s choice to play Black Cat in his canceled Spider-Man 4.
Pascal also revealed the status of the Silver and Black film, which Gina Prince-Bythewood is set to direct and would feature Black Cat and Silver Sable:
“We’re still working on that. I think we have plans for that.”
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box office, Sony reevaluated its plans for its own cinematic universe and eventually, a deal with struck with Marvel Studios to bring the webhead into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland replacing Garfield as the new Peter Parker. But with that in mind, Sony still had plans for their own films centered on Spider-Man and other prominent characters in that character’s rolodex of villains. Sony recently released films such as Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which were made without Marvel Studios’ involvement and were both financially successful.
Sony currently has another standalone Spider-Man villain movie on the way centered on Morbius, the Living Vampire. Academy Award-winner Jared Leto will play that character.
