Black Panther again made history this morning when it became the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards. The film scored additional nominations in six other categories, including Best Original Score, Best Original Song for All the Stars, and Best Production Design. Still, some fans feel the Academy has overlooked Ryan Coogler for Best Director.
Though Ryan Coogler missed out on the nod, President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, recognized and reinforced the young director’s achievements on Black Panther:
“[Coogler] had a very personal story and struggle to explore, and he wanted to use this movie and this canvas to tell it. Looking over the past year at the cultural impact this movie has had around the world, it feels like the recognition from the Academy this morning is the pinnacle of that.”
Fans too were vocal about their decisions. Scroll down to check out what some fans are saying about Ryan Coogler’s snub:
Also Ryan Coogler should’ve definitely got a Oscar nomination for best director! Like come on..

Despite 7 nominations I still think Ryan Coogler deserved best director nomination.

Also nominated for original song, production design, costume design, sound editing, sound mixing, and original score. Sadly Ryan Coogler wasn't nominated for Best director. I would love… https://t.co/htDIk1dEtW

Why not Ryan Coogler, Academy? I would think that much of #BlackPanther's success was owing to his vision. #AcademyAwards

#BlackPanther got nominated for Best Picture but Ryan Coogler didn’t get nominated for Best Director 🤔 I didn’t know movies are directing themselves these days.

why isn’t ryan coogler nominated for best director? #oscar2019 #oscarnominatioms #oscarsnubs

The lack of a Best Director nomination for Ryan Coogler and Best Supporting for Micheal B. Jordan makes the Best Picture nom for Black Panther seem like a token nomination after they canned the Popular Film category.
