Rachel Weisz In Talks To Join Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow’

The Favourite star Rachel Weisz is in early talks to join Scarlett Johansson in the highly-anticipated Black Widow movie from Marvel Studios.

News broke earlier today that Stranger Things star David Harbour has boarded the cast of the Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson. Now, Variety is reporting that Rachel Weisz is circling what is being described as a “key role” in the project.

Rachel Weisz was last seen in the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed period drama The Favourite, which won seven BAFTA Awards and ten British Independent Film Awards. Weisz has received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Constant Gardener.

Lore helmer Cate Shortland is directing Black Widow from a script written by Ned Benson and Jac Schaeffer. Production is expected to begin this June in London with rising actress Florence Pugh also on board alongside Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour.

The Black Widow film is expected to take place before the character’s debut in Iron Man 2. The standalone film has the opportunity to explore the widow program, which would reveal the origin of Black Widow and how she became the formidable assassin she is today
