Martin Scorsese’s criticisms of the superhero genre have been the topic of debate for quite some time, with many film fans siding with the legendary director. Although many acknowledged that it’s possible to agree withMartin Scorsese’s criticisms while still enjoying the movies put out by Marvel and DC.
During a roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson explained that while she originally thought Martin Scorsese’s criticisms seemed old fashioned, she’s since seen the debate from a different perspective. The actress explains that since the larger blockbusters dominate mainstream cinema, it doesn’t leave much room for smaller movies – which she hadn’t actually considered before when Martin Scorsese’s criticisms first hit the news. “There’s certainly a place for all kinds of cinema right now. People absorb content in so many different ways. I actually didn’t totally understand that statement, because I guess I needed some insight as to what it meant exactly. Because to me it seemed a little old-fashioned. But somebody pointed out to me that perhaps what the statement meant was that there’s no room for smaller films, because the cinema is taken up by these enormous blockbusters, and smaller movies don’t have a chance at the theater, which I hadn’t actually considered and think is a valid point.”
