Blade is currently on hold at Marvel Studios, but Mahershala Ali is actively involved with the movie.
Earlier this year, Bassam Tariq exited his role as director of the Marvel Studios movie Blade, leaving the project without a captain. Marvel ended up pausing Blade in its pre-production stage as it still hasn’t found a suitable replacement for Tariq, pushing the movie’s start date to early next year. The project was initially supposed to begin filming this November.
Mahershala Ali is here to stay
Despite all the recent negative press surrounding Blade, Slashfilm reports that Mahershala Ali is still involved with the project. According to the site, Ali is playing a key role in resharping the story of Blade and even has the power to request rewrites during this multi-week break from pre-production.
The Blade script is being rewritten by Beau DeMayo. The screenwriter has previously worked on the Disney Plus series Moon Knight. He is also developing the revival of X-Men: The Animated Series for the streaming service.
With Blade now beginning production later than initially expected, Disney has pushed the Marvel Studios title to September 2024, back from November 2023. The break also resulted in delays for other Marvel projects, including Fantastic Four and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The cast of Blade currently features Mahershala Ali as the titular titular vampire hunter, with Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre and Milan Ray on board in undisclosed roles. It’s unclear if this delay is going to affect the cast of the project.
