A new live-action Blade Runner series, titled Blade Runner 2099 is in the works at Amazon Studios with Ridley Scott acting as an executive producer.
The Blade Runner films are ones that sadly don’t ever seem to have a lot of luck. The original film, directed by Ridley Scott received a mixed response from critics at the time it was released and was a box office disappointment. Following various re-releases on home media formats, the film eventually earned a reputation as being one of the best science fiction films of all time.
35 years later Warner Bros released a sequel titled Blade Runner 2049 under director Denis Villeneuve. The film was well-received by critics and audience members who saw it but, like its predecessor, failed to draw in the crowds and only earned $259M worldwide on a budget that was estimated between $150M-$185M. But now it appears that the franchise is getting another shot through Amazon Studios.
Last year, original director Ridley Scott revealed that a new Blade Runner series was in development, but was vague on the details. Now we know that the upcoming series will be produced by Amazon Studios and is titled Blade Runner 2099. Ridley Scott himself is an executive producer of the series with Silka Luisa also serving as an executive producer and writer of the series. It is currently unknown if any of the previous cast members will reprise their roles for the series.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Barkhad Abdi, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto.
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new Blade Runner, LAPD officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD Blade Runner who has been missing for thirty years.
The film is now available on digital home media, DVD, and Blu-Ray. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Amazon Studios series and Ridley Scott’s involvement in it and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
