‘Booksmart’ Star Kaitlyn Dever Comments On ‘The Last Of Us’ Fan-Casting

Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever discussed her thoughts on fans calling for her to play Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us series.

After the news last month that HBO is developing The Last of Us into a series from Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, fans were quick to suggest a number of actors to play Joel and Ellie in live-action. One name that keeps circling the discussions on social media is Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever. Although some think the 23 year-old actress is too old to play Ellie, who’s 14 in the first game, the star told Collider that she thinks it has a “beautiful story.”

“Well, this is the first time I’m being asked about this. Listen, I am a huge fan of the game, and I don’t know if a lot of people know that, but I’m saying it now; I am a huge fan of that video game. I think it is a beautiful story. It’s just a wonderful narrative, and I fell in love with that game when it came out. And I played it with my dad and we just had the best time. I’m not very good at it. My aim is really bad, but I’m working on getting better at playing. But I love The Last of Us. I think it’s an incredible story.”

Kaitlyn Dever went on to say that she’s seen the conversations about the HBO series online and explained that Neil Druckmann is one of the smartest creators she’s ever met after working with him on Uncharted 4. She also pointed out that she isn’t turning down the idea that she could play Ellie in the series, explaining that she would “absolutely love to do that.” The Booksmart star also noted that she doesn’t know anything about the show, but that she loves the game.

“I obviously have been seeing the Internet, and I’ve obviously been seeing a lot of that. Neil Druckmann, I worked with him on Uncharted 4. I think he’s one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met, and one of the sweetest. And I’m not shutting it down, you know? I’m not shutting it down. I would absolutely love to do that. But I don’t know where it’s at yet. But I love The Last Of Us.”

Would you like to see the Booksmart star as Ellie in the show from Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin? Who else do you think should star in the series? Sound off in the comments below!

The Last of Us centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and 14-year-old Ellie, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States. The HBO adaptation will cover the events of the first game, with the upcoming game The Last of Us Part II potentially surviving as the basis for additional content.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on The Last of Us adaptation from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and HBO as it develops.
