Avengers: Endgame is already poised to be one of the highest grossing films in box office history, according to some early predictions from box office analysts.
The trailer for Avengers: Endgame quickly became the most viewed movie trailer on Youtube in 24 hours. Given the huge box office numbers behind this year’s Marvel Cinematic Universe films, particularly Avengers: Infinity War, it’s no surprise that many experts in the industry are claiming that the film will earn $2 billion worldwide.
Avengers: Infinity War crossed the $2 billion mark this summer and considering that the film ended with a crazy cliffhanger, fans are itching for the next installment in the franchise. According to a report from CNBC, many of the box office analysts in the industry are claiming that Endgame will be far from a box office disappointment. The first quote comes from Shawn Robbins, chief analyst for Box Office.com
“There are always caveats to forecasts this far out from release, but we think it’s another strong candidate for $600 million or more domestically, and possibly $2 billion worldwide.
The stakes have been raised organically, and the slow reveal surrounding Endgame only intensifies curiosity. We’re talking about the safest box office bet since ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ itself and the recent episodic ‘Star Wars’ films.”
President of Box Office Analyst, Doug Stone, also shed some light on why he believes the next Avengers film is a surefire hit.
“There really isn’t much to compete with it until later in May. That gives Avengers four weeks to amass a huge box office.”
SuperBroMovies.com writer Daniel Richtman compared the consistency of the MCU films to the consistency of films released by another company owned by Disney, which is, of course, Pixar.
“I think that, at this point we can have confidence in Marvel. No other movie studios [except] for Pixar managed to deliver such a streak of high-quality, entertaining big budget action/adventure films that everyone can enjoy.”
Richtman also compared the fan anticipation for the film to the third installment of the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi.
“This type of storytelling was never done before on the big screen. I think Marvel fans around the world are anxious to see how after ten years and 20 films, the studio would wrap up the long saga of the Avengers. This is Marvel’s ‘Return of the Jedi’.”
Karie Bible is a box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations and according to her, the secrecy behind Endgame‘s marketing is a good move.
“The hush marketing approach is actually brilliant.”
MCU Cosmic editor-in-chief Jeremy Conrad also stated that the secrecy behind the film is a key aspect of the anticipation, but it may not be so good for fans’ enjoyment of the film.
“Due to the secrecy of Endgame over the last six months, there are a lot of fan theories out there on sites like Reddit that people become attached to. Marvel will never be able to match what some fans have already imagined.”
A Chapman University film professor by the name of Kia Afra also chimed in on what makes the trailer for Avengers: Endgame so unique, as well as the film as a whole.
“Just watching the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ trailer demands an understanding of not only the Avengers series, but also the various other interconnected Marvel franchises. Avengers is thus a truly inter-textual blockbuster franchise on the scale that hasn’t been attempted before.”
