Box office weekend: 'Logan' claws its way to the top with a Friday debut of $33 million in over four thousand theaters across the U.S.

Hugh Jackman may have retracted his claws as the iconic Wolverine, but Logan is just getting started at the weekend box office where it has already made a splash with a $33 million debut on Friday.

James Mangold’s film is set to earn $80 million over the weekend, making it another big win for 20th Century Fox and further proves that R-rated superhero films, which studios have shied away from in the past, can draw in large audiences. The film opened in over 4,000 theaters, one of the biggest R-rated openings ever.

Logan has received widespread critical acclaim thus far. It also opened in international film markets and is set to make an additional $75-$100 million overseas. The film marks the final time that Hugh Jackman will be playing the character. This alone might draw some people to see it because, after 17 years, saying goodbye to a popular and iconic character is worth paying for.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Directed by James Mangold, Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq LaSalle, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Boyd Holbrook.
