The CW has officially announced that the current third season of its DC Comics drama Stagirl is also its last. The final episode of the Brec Bassinger series is set to air on December 7th.

Nexstar axes Stargirl

According to Deadline, Stargirl executive producer Geoff Johns and his team were informed of the decision before they started writing season three so that they could wrap up the series in a fitting manner. The decision was made by Nexstar, which recently acquired acquired a 75% majority stake in The CW.

‘Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” Geoff Johns said in a statement. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure.”

“The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations,” the executive added. “I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built.”

Stargirl premiered in May 2020 and follows Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as they form a superhero team that is inspired by the original iteration of the Justice Society of America. The titular character was created in honor of Geoff Johns’ sister, who died as a result of a plane crash in 1996.

In addition to Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson, Stargirl also stars Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Jake Austin Walker, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson, Christopher James Baker, Amy Smart, Hunter Sansone, Nick Tarabay, Joel McHale, Alkoya Brunson, Neil Hopkins and Joy Osmanski.
