‘The Marvels’ Stars Brie Larson & Zawe Ashton Get The Spotlight In New Images

Meet the hero and the villain!

Zawe Ashton The Marvels Dar-Benn

The latest issue of Total Film features two never-before-seen images from The Marvels. One showcases Brie Larson in her iconic role as Carol Danvers while the other introduces Zawe Ashton as the enigmatic Dar-Benn.

The first image captures Brie Larson in all her glory as Carol Danvers. The Academy Award-winning actress, who looks formidable in her full superhero costume, has portrayed Captain Marvel since her 2019 solo movie, and her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was further solidified in Avengers: Endgame.

The second image is particularly intriguing for both longtime fans and newcomers to the MCU. Zawe Ashton is featured as the villainous Dar-Benn. While Ashton has previously showcased her versatile acting prowess in various roles, this will be her debut in a superhero movie.

“I’m excited that the MCU has three lead women, all from very diverse backgrounds, and they’re all baddies in their own way,” Parris said in a recent interview with EW. “It’s going to be really exciting just to see these smart, fun, intelligent, and troubled women find their way.”

The talent behind The Marvels

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.

“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
