‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff From Bryan Cogman Dead At HBO

Game of Thrones Night King HBO Spoilers White Walkers Dave Hill Bryan Cogman

Game of Thrones co-executive producer Bryan Cogman has confirmed HBO will not be moving forward with his concept for a spin-off of the hit fantasy series.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Cogman revealed that his plans for a potential spin-off are “not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way.” Instead, Cogman will be moving on to work with Amazon as part of an exclusive deal he signed with the studio:

“I am done with Westeros. I’ll certainly miss it, but I’m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain’s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I’ve learned.”

Cogman was one of five people including Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad MenThe Leftovers) and Jane Goldman all developing spin-off projects at the premium cabler. So far, only one of these has been greenlit at HBO, that being Goldman’s.

Goldman wrote the series pilot. She serves as showrunner along with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin who is executive producing the series with Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman. Plot details for the series have not been revealed, nor has the series been officially titled, however, the logline for the untitled prequel is as follows: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

The Game of Thrones prequel series stars Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse (Poldark). Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Shella Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.

S.J. Clarkson is directing the series pilot. The first spin-off from the premium cabler is not expected to debut until at least one year after the final season of Game of Thrones airs so it’s possible we could see the Naomi-Watts-led Game of Thrones series make its debut in 2020.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the final season of Game of Thrones as we learn it.
