Even intergalactic warriors need to look good, but are there Ultas in space? The Russo Brothers explain how Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel appears in Avengers: Endgame with full makeup.
Out with the Rachel from Friends haircut, in with the flat-ironed golden locks that could make Thor miss his pre-Ragnarok look. With the addition of a full face of makeup and even red lipstick, Carol Danvers’ first appearance in Avengers: Endgame shows a different look from when we last saw her just a few short months ago in Captain Marvel.
The odd choice of having a female lead being fully dolled up after traveling across the galaxy after half of the entire universe was just decimated has caught The Russo Brothers more than a little flack. Was it the directors subjecting Brie Larson’s cosmic Avenger to the “male gaze?” They say it’s, in part, due to “scheduling conflicts.” While Captain Marvel did release months before Avengers: Endgame, Brie Larson actually shot all her scenes for Avengers: Endgame first. This means there was still experimentation on the part of the directors and Brie Larson for what that character would end up becoming.
On the other hand, the Russo Brothers actually don’t hold control over the details of makeup and hair of the characters, leaving that up to the actors themselves. Of course, any major changes need to be run by the brothers first, like Scarlett Johansson’s idea to have Black Widow go blonde for Avengers: Infinity War. “We give all the actors ownership over there,” said Joe Russo when speaking to Slashfilm on the subject.
The Russo Brothers went a little deeper on Carol Danvers’ inconsistent between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.
“She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”
