Warning: The following post contains major Captain Marvel spoilers!
Captain Marvel introduces the classic comic book hero Mar-Vell to the MCU, but the film offers a new take on the first character to take on the titular mantle.
Captain Marvel centered on Carol Danvers’ attempt to uncover the truth about her forgotten past after the Skrulls deduce the identity of a mysterious woman, played by Annette Benning, who keeps appearing in her dreams. Carol herself later learns that the woman is named Doctor Wendy Lawson, an undercover Kree scientist who worked with the United States Air Force on Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.
Lawson attempted to harness the power of the Tesseract to create a Light-Speed Engine that she planned to offer to the Skrulls in hopes of ending the war between the shape-shifters and the Kree. Carol Danvers was enlisted to test out the engine with Lawson, but their vessel was attacked by a Kree starship and crashed back on Earth, resulting in a confrontation with Yon-Rogg that ended with Lawson’s death and an amnesiac Carol being abducted after the energy from the engine granted her superpowers.
As Carol discovers the truth behind her past, she learns that Lawson’s real name was Mar-Vell, revealing that Annette Benning is playing a gender-swapped version of the classic Marvel hero. Much like the film version of the character, the comic book Mar-Vell was an undercover scientist who was sent to Earth to asses whether or not the inhabitants posed a threat to the Kree, although this incarnation used the alias, Walter Lawson.
