Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck discussed alternate ways Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury could have lost his eye during an interview with ComicBookMovie.com.
Captain Marvel followed the origin story of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, but the film also allowed audiences to witness the early adventures of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury years before he assembled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In fact, Captain Marvel finally answered the mystery surrounding the loss of Nick Fury’s eye and most fans were surprised to learn Samuel L. Jackson’s character lost it after an irritated Goose the “Cat” scratched him.
Of course, some fans were disappointed that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury didn’t lose his eye in a more serious conflict and co-director Ryan Fleck noted the filmmakers considered alternative ways for the character to sustain his injury. However, Ryan Fleck explained that alternatives such as a battle with a Skrull were deemed too obvious:
“There were definitely a lot of discussions and that was not the first idea on the table. You’re probably going to ask me what some of the other ideas were and I don’t know if I can tell you that, not because I’m hiding anything, but because there were just so many absurd ideas we had. There was a strong contender for a while that a fight with the Skrulls seemed like the most obvious choice but then the more we thought about it, it just became too obvious.
Since this is just as much Nick Fury’s origin story as Captain Marvel’s, we thought that it would be a fun piece of his backstory that moving forward, he was creative a new narrative for himself that he didn’t really talk about but he was fine with people wanting to muse about a potentially more serious way he could have lost his eye.”
