New ‘Cars 3’ Trailer Brings Series Back To Its Roots

The brand-spanking new Cars 3 races onto the scene, bringing old and new characters together for the Pixar threequel hitting theaters this June.

Cars 3 is rounding the track for its final lap before its summer release and today we got a new trailer for Pixar Animation’s latest film. Check it out below.

The initial trailer last November raised some eyebrows for its dark opening featuring series protagonist Lightning McQueen flipping mid-accident, indicating this threequel would be tonally distinct from the previous two entries. The Cars franchise is very much the baby of Pixar head honcho John Lasseter and a huge merchandising moneymaker for Disney. From what I know about the film, there are several ways it not only returns the series to its roots but adds exciting new elements like new characters voiced by Cristela Alonzo and Nathan Fillion. Here’s the film’s synopsis.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that No. 95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage! It is directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2”) and produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short).

Cars 3 cruises into theaters on June 16.
