Newly released concept art from Black Panther show off alternate mask designs for Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa.

In a time where black representation and rights are at the forefront of pop culture and world issues, Black Panther concept artist Jerad S.Marantz has shared alternate designs for the mask worn by the King of Wakanda. The concept art shows Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther wearing three different mask designs that differ from the one we saw in the 2018 film. While they’re all interesting and add to the character’s already mystical look, the most intriguing has to be the half-mask design that reveals the bottom half of Boseman’s face.

When it opened in 2018, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther became a cultural juggernaut, especially for those in marginalized communities. The film was touted for having a predominantly black cast and an intimate story that showed the struggle of the community within the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Marvel project went on to become the highest-grossing film by a black director and set a record for the MCU: getting 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. With black issues taking over the news cycle, now is a great to remind ourselves of the solidarity and hope that Boseman’s hero brought audiences only two short years ago.
