Chloe Zhao has revealed that she’s willing to direct a sequel to Eternals.

After a series of lengthy delays, Chloe Zhao’s Eternals is finally set to hit cinemas in the coming weeks. Taking place in both the past and present, the film focuses on the immortal race of cosmic beings who protect Earth from their nefarious counterparts: the Deviants. Arriving on Earth over 7,000 years ago, the Eternals join some of our earliest civilizations before fracturing off into different corners of the world.

First reactions from Eternals are wholly promising, with many praising Chloe Zhao’s visuals and emphasis on character dynamics. It’s unclear if a sequel is already in the works at Marvel Studios but if there is, it looks like Zhao is more than ready to step back into the director’s chair. Zhao expressed her interest in a sequel with The Playlist.

“What I loved about making this film is that it tied so close to the origin of the MCU is also going to have a big repercussion moving MCU forward. With those two as secured, we get to play and do whatever we want and make a stand strong standalone film and leave everything on the table. I would be back in a second working with the team at Marvel for sure. So we’ll see.”

Since we haven’t seen the film, it’s hard to speculate if the film will get a sequel but this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe… so head honcho Kevin Feige can always find a way to incorporate these characters into future projects, hopefully with Chloe Zhao in tow. Zhao is most well-known for her indie dramas which have been festival darlings, but Eternals is set to be her first blockbuster debut.

Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming MCU film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
