Eternals director Chloe Zhao teases the implications of the Kit Harrington-focused post-credits scene.

Chloe Zhao’s sci-fi epic is finally available to stream on Disney Plus While the film may not have been the critical or commercial darling Marvel Studios had hoped for, viewers are continuing to reappraise the film now that’s widely available to watch. While the narrative surrounding the film continues to evolve, Zhao is focused on the future of the characters she helped craft.

It’s unclear at this junction if Eternals will get a formal sequel, but Marvel Studios does appear to have concrete plans for a number of characters that were introduced in the film. After all, the film ended on a major cliffhanger and a post-credits sequence that appears to have major implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a commentary track for Eternals, director Chloe Zhao specifically teased the future of Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman, who is on track to become Marvel’s Black Knight. In conversation with production visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti and additional visual effects supervisor Mårten Larsson, Zhao noted how the post-credits “sets up so much” for Marvel’s ever-expanding universe.

The post-credits sequence notably sees Kit Harrington’s soon-to-be hero interacting with the Ebony Blade, as well as Mahershala Ali’s Blade, who makes his MCU debut in the film.

Chloé Zhao: “Ebony Blade, who would have thought. I definitely geek out quite a bit, especially when the voice that comes in the end.”

Mårten Larsson: “It’s just a cool post-credits scene. Simple, but sets up so much.”

Chloé Zhao: “Sets up so much… And, I love this effect they use on the sword so much. Did we use… Was it sand magnets?

Stephane Ceretti: “It was magnetic ferrite… I think it’s cool.”

Chloé Zhao: “Yeah, the idea of a blood curse, how to show that.”
