Concept art from Thor shows off Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder with an Ultimates-inspired suit.
Before the groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe was laid, concept artists had to spend countless hours creating and visualizing the aesthetics for some of our favorite characters’ live-action debuts. It’s a daunting task to imagine what something or someone will look like well before cameras have begun to roll. Luckily, artists like Charlie Wen have a treasure-trove of comic books to look back onto to visualize what the MCU’s characters could look like. In a brand new post on Instagram, Wen shared an early concept image of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor that took design inspiration from the Ultimates version of the character.
The concept art of Thor was conducted well before production even began on the MCU film. You can check out the artwork shared by Wen below.

Hey guys, I’m continuing to share the first few B&W #thor #concepts I did before preproduction started on the film. This one was one of the few concepts of Thor without his cape, based on the #Ultimates comic series – which btw is incredible. It was one of the first times I felt like superheroes felt like real people in real situations ? * * * #marvel #mcu #earlyconcepts #norsemyth #godofthunder #imcharliewen
As the caption states, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is missing his iconic cape. While it’s hard to imagine the God of Thunder without his cape, the character does look great in the concept art. Without the cape, the take on Thor feels more loose and lighter. The inspiration from the Ultimates design is clearly seen and it honestly makes the character’s suit look very fluid. The suit Hemsworth wore in the film is less tactical and is far more regal than the one seen above. Both takes on the God of Thunder’s suits are great, but we have to give it up for the Ultimates design as it’s not only unique but also seems better suited for the tactility of combat.
