Director Chris McKay has revealed the first details on what fans can expect from the upcoming Nightwing film which is currently in development.
The film is set to follow Dick Grayson who became the first Robin in the Batman mythology after Bruce Wayne took him in following the death of his parents, The Flying Graysons who were murdered at the circus.
When asked by a fan about the project on Twitter, McKay opened up and offered some insight into his approach to the hero as he explained how he plans on realizing what made the character resonate for him in live-action:
“The story of Dick Grayson, becoming Robin, then becoming Nightwing played out for us, the audience, in the comics in REAL TIME. It wasn’t a flashback. We experienced it. So all of Robin/Nightwings successes and failures we were along for the ride.”
Mckay went on to add that even the people who underestimated the character at first had their opinion swayed as he evolved throughout the comics:
“And people that underestimated Robin or dismissed him perhaps had their opinions changed as we watched him “grow up” right in front of us. His relationships, his conflicts with Batman et al felt real to me because he was the window character with which we experienced Gotham city.”
When a fan expressed their hope that the actor who is eventually cast in the role loves the character as much as McKay, the director explained that the actor is going to have to share that same level of passion in order to achieve the necessary performance to bring the character to life:
“He has too. It has to be full commitment. Every day. It is going to be gruelling from a martial arts, gymnastics and stunt perspective. Also emotionally taxing. It’s going to be real.”
McKay is directing the Nightwing film from a script written by Bill Dubuque (The Accountant). As of now, the film does not have a release date.

7 Essential Nightwing Stories For New Fans
Nightwing is easily one of the most iconic superheroes in the DC Universe (maybe even just in general) and he’s finally gearing up to hit the big screen. Dick Grayson is one of DC’s oldest characters, and as a result he has gone through major changes. The character started as the first ever Robin and has since developed his own heroic mantle as well as temporarily becoming Batman when Bruce isn’t available. He’s one of the few characters in comics audiences have seen grown up and change over time and that has led to a devoted fan-base who wants to protect the character.
He’s such a fan-favorite that his planned death in the 2005 event Infinite Crisis was scrapped out of fear of angry reactions. Nightwing might have the same skills as Batman, but his optimism and social abilities make him a positive character that other superheroes come to in times of crisis. So if you don’t know too much about the friendliest guy in the DC Universe, just pick up one of these books and dive in!
