Christian Bale calls Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker brave to follow up Heath Ledger.

Fans still have to wait just under a month to see Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, but former Batman Christian Bale has said that the actor is brave to take on the Joker after Heath Ledger. Ledger’s deranged Clown Prince of Crime in The Dark Knight was an Oscar-worthy performance, and many early reviews are already tipping Joaquin Phoenix for an academy award for his version of the Joker. Whether audiences will have the same reception remains to be seen.

But when speaking to ET Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival, Christian Bale said that he thinks Joaquin Phoenix is brave to take on the role after Heath Ledger. Christian Bale also praised Joaquin Phoenix as one of the best actors currently working and also went on to say that he couldn’t wait to see the film, so he clearly didn’t mean anything negative by his comments. Watch the interview below.

“Joaquin is one of the best actors around, you know, and obviously I worked with Heath. You know, it’s a brave thing to follow up that performance and he always makes interesting choices. Dying to see it, I wish them the best with that.”

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019. Stay tuned for the latest news on the Joaquin Phoenix movie!
