After having the pleasure of introducing the fan-favorite character in Captain America: Civil War, Anthony Russo spoke about his faith in Jon Watt’s upcoming film Spider-Man: Homecoming. The upcoming film will be the first Spider-Man solo film to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if Russo is to be believed could be the best Spider-Man film period.
“[Joe and I] love [Jon Watts], we think he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker, super bright guy.”
“He’s crazy talented, the script is amazing, and we have really high expectations for the movie.”
“I think the tone and the direction that he’s heading in that movie are fantastic. I think it has the potential to be the best Spider-Man yet, and I know that’s saying a lot because perhaps my favorite comic book movie of all time is Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.”
Many fans also hold Spider-Man 2 to be their favorite of the Spider-Man films; so if Anthony Russo believes Homecoming can topple that, many fans will be left very happy. The director then went on to speak about how other Marvel films, like Civil War, will influence the upcoming film.
“From a process standpoint, it’s like it is with all other Marvel directors. Everybody runs into each other in the hallways, we’re passing off story information between each other. I don’t necessarily know how much it influenced me yet because we’re not involved in it on a day-to-day project, a process, and we’ve seen as much as everybody else has seen, meaning if you were at Comic-Con and you saw the Comic-Con trailer, that’s what we’ve seen of it.”
His response here is really similar to what we’ve been hearing from all the Marvel directors as well as the Netflix showrunners. It seems Marvel does a really good job of keeping everyone on the same page in regards to each others work.
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7th, 2017.
