According to a producer on The Batman, Colin Farrell’s upcoming Penguin series is said to have a story like Scarface.
With the highly-anticipated release of The Batman less than one week away, fans are already excited to see how Matt Reeves and his team plan to expand the lore of Gotham City through new series and upcoming sequels. Two spin-off shows are currently in the works for HBO Max: Gotham PD, and a series centered on Colin Farrell’s Penguin.
While promoting The Batman, producer Dylan Clark discussed the further expansion of the story through HBO Max shows, including the upcoming Penguin series with Colin Farrell. In particular, he likened the story to that of Scarface, telling SFX Magazine the following:
“We’re doing one with Colin [Farrell, as Oswald Cobblepot], seeing Oz rise to power, almost like a ‘Scarface’ story. It’s exciting to do something like that just as a standalone, but it speaks to the character and our movie, so that you’ll go back to the movie [and say], ‘Oh, I see that backstory there, that line refers to this.'”
Although one would think two different spin-off series set in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe would be a bit redundant, at the very least, both series would be of different genres. Gotham PD will likely be more of a police procedural drama whereas Colin Farrell’s Penguin show will be more like a drama set in the criminal underworld, similar to Scarface. Either way, the possibilities are exciting for this new era for Gotham City, and we will dive deeper into the character of The Penguin more than we ever have before, and if told with the same dramatic tension of Scarface is quite intriguing.
Colin Farrell makes his debut as Oswald Cobblepot AKA The Penguin in The Batman. Here is the synopsis:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and Colin Farrell’s Penguin series, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
