The Penguin actor Colin Farrell has teased that Matt Reeves’ script for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is bringing something new to the series.

Based on everything we’ve heard and seen from The Batman so far, it appears Matt Reeves is taking the franchise in a bold, new direction. Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is also set to build a cinematic universe of its own with a HBO Max series centered on the Gotham City Police Department and the upcoming film featuring several members of the rogue’s gallery such as Colin Farrell’s The Penguin.

Colin Farrell has admitted in the past that he doesn’t have a large role in The Batman, but shared in a recent interview with SFX Magazine that he is very excited to join the universe as The Penguin:

‘The whole prospect is really exciting. I’m ecstatic to be part of that universe. There are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon and those words are Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent… all of those things.”

Later on in the interview, Colin Farrell praised Danny DeVito’s portrayal of The Penguin in Batman Returns and teased that Matt Reeves’ script will bring something new to the Batman franchise:

“I have been watching the Batman films with my kids, but this script is something that feels incredibly original. It leans into it but it doesn’t borrow; it’s born of the mythology of that character, Bruce Wayne, Batman and Gotham. But it feels like a treatment and a version that I hadn’t seen before. Matt Reeves has done an incredible job of keeping it familiar and at the same time unique and new. It’s really exciting to be a part of it.”

Plot details for The Batman are being kept under wraps but the project will be centered on Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector. The Batman will also feature the hero making use of his detective skills more than what we’ve seen before in previous iterations of the character. The film is also expected to be the first installment to a new trilogy with Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news regarding The Batman universe and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more exclusive video content.
