The Penguin Star Colin Farrell’s Favorite Batman Actor Isn’t Robert Pattinson

Colin Farrell has a soft spot for this Batman actor!

Robert Pattinson The Batman Colin Farrell The Penguin

Colin Farrell made his debut as The Penguin in The Batman, captivating audiences with his portrayal of the iconic DC Comics villain. His work as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot has paved the way for him to reprise his role in an upcoming Max series titled The Penguin, set to premiere on the streaming service later this year.

Recently, Farrell spoke with MovieWeb about his role in Sugar, and the conversation naturally veered towards his favorite characters in the Batman universe. The actor expressed his admiration for Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight, stating, “My favorite Batman actors or movie…I mean, Heath. Heath takes it, you know.” However, Farrell also acknowledged his appreciation for other portrayals, adding, “I mean, I don’t want to sit on the fence, but I’ve enjoyed so many of them. I love Jack [Nicholson] as well as the Joker.”

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of Batman’s rogues’ gallery, Farrell cited Christian Bale’s perspective on the multiple interpretations of DC characters: “And these characters of lore are so well-designed initially that they just withstand. It was like, Christian Bale was asked a question, I saw once, about the new Batman that was coming and about Robert [Pattinson] playing Batman, and Christian said something along the lines of, and I paraphrase, that these characters, they survive and they invite multiple interpretations.”

As expected, Farrell was diplomatic on the topic of who he believes is the best Dark Knight, especially considering his recent work with Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Yet, he confessed a particular fondness for Michael Keaton’s Batman, saying, “I have a soft spot for Michael Keaton because I was like, maybe 10 or 11 or 12 when I saw that, and I was just obsessed with it, you know?”

When does The Penguin arrive on Max?

During a recent Q4 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav provided an update on The Penguin, hinting at its premiere date. His comments logically place The Penguin on track for a fall 2024 release.

Mare Of Easttown helmer Craig Zobel is directing the first two episodes of The Penguin, with Lauren LeFranc (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck) overseeing the project as its writer and showrunner. Colin Farrell is an executive producer on the series alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark.
