A new report claims to have details on Colin Trevorrow’s original plan for Rey’s backstory in Star Wars: Episode IX.
Ever since Daisy Ridley’s Rey was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans have been formulating theories on the character’s origins and why she has proven to be exceptionally strong with the force. While Star Wars: The Last Jedi revealed Rey’s parents were simple junk traders who abandoned, some fans are still hoping there is more to the heroine’s backstory that has yet to be revealed.
Now, MakingStarWars.net claims to have received information on what Colin Trevorrow originally envisioned for Rey’s origins before departing Star Wars: Episode IX over creative differences. According to the report, Colin Trevorrow intended to have Rey’s parents be servants of the Solo family and that the young heroine would have grown up with Ben long before he became Kylo Ren:
In the unmade Trevorrow/Connolly Star Wars: Episode IX story, Rey had a rather interesting backstory. No, she wasn’t a Solo or a Skywalker. Rey was going to be the daughter of a woman who was a cook, housemaid, and once nanny to Ben Solo. Rey and Ben were to have grown up together and she was like his little sister, living in the Solo household together.
It is not clear if Rey’s mom was let go because she was a drunkard, but I do know that Colin Trevorrow was continuing with the idea that Rey’s parents were nobodies. It was implied at one time that the father and mother of Rey fought at the Battle of Jakku before taking up domestic duties in the Solo family home. So for whatever reason, they returned to that world.
Additional plans for Colin Trevorrow’s unmade Episode IX include a subplot involving the First Order erasing people’s memories and the exclusion of Emperor Palpatine.
