As the next installment of the new Batman film’s continues to undergo changes following the departure of Ben Affleck as the projects director, it can be easy to forget that this is not the first time the Caped Crusader has had a tumultuous experience transitioning from page to screen. Following the critical and box office failure of Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, plans for a fifth entry in the original Batman film series were scrapped with developments on a new one failing to move forward until Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. While reports and rumors on the cancelled Schumacher film have circulated over the years, rapper Coolio recently told the Burleson Star the surprising news that he had once been offered to play the lead antagonist in the project.
Coolio, who had a cameo appearance in Batman & Robin, revealed that he agreed to appear in the film after being promised the role of the Scarecrow in the sequel.
“Batman & Robin was the only Batman that didn’t make money. I’m still sore about that a little bit, cause the only reason I did that part is because they promised me the villain part in the following Batman, which they didn’t do, because Joel Schumacher; They fired him.”
Coolio revealed that his relationship with Schumacher was not great and admits that he will likely never receive a call to play the character again.
“He was supposed to do the two next ones. He and I didn’t get along that good anyway – I mean he made a terrible Batman movie. But the next villain was supposed to be the Scarecrow. They didn’t do it though. Maybe one day – I’m sure they won’t come calling though.”
Considering how strange and campy the Schumacher Batman films were, having Coolio play the role of Scarecrow would not be all too surprising had the sequel moved forward. How do you think of Coolio would have done playing Scarecrow? Share your thoughts below!
