Netflix Shuts Down Production On ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Due To John Cho Injury

Netflix shuts down production on their upcoming live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop after headlining star John Cho suffers an injury.

John Cho suffered a knee injury on the set of Cowboy Bebop in Aukland, New Zealand on October 5, 2019. No other specifics were reported on following John Cho’s injury, but the actor has since returned to Los Angeles, CA to undergo surgery and rehabilitation as a result of his injury.

Netflix released the following statement regarding the production suspension on Cowboy Bebop and John Cho’s injury:

“Our thoughts are with John and he has our complete support as he recuperates from this injury.”

Production on Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is expected to resume around seven to nine months from now to accommodate John Cho’s recovery from his knee injury.

John Cho will be headlining Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop cast as Spike Spiegel, leader of the series’ intergalactic gang. Also joining John Cho will be Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) as Jet Black, Alex Hassell (The Miniaturist) as Vicous and Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Faye Valentine in the upcoming adaption of the hugely popular anime of space bounty hunters.

The director of the original 1998 Cowboy Bebop anime, Shinichiro Watanabe, will be a consultant on the Netflix series. The original series spawned a manga series and a movie before making its way to western audiences in 2001. The series was certainly influential as part of a new wave of anime hitting the U.S. in the early 2000s.

The original Cowboy Bebop anime followed the bounty hunter crew of the Bebop in their adventures across space. The series mainly focused on Spike Spiegel, the carefree cool guy dealing the effects of his troubled past, and his partner Jet Black, the uptight and cynical captain of the Bebop, as well as the rest of the crew.

Here is Netflix’s tentative synopsis of their upcoming live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation:

“A ragtag crew of bounty hunters chases down the galaxy’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll save the world … for the right price. A live-action series.”
