Deadline reports Dan Trachtenberg will no longer direct Sony’s upcoming Uncharted film starring Tom Holland.

Dan Trachtenberg is the latest director to have exited the long-in-development Uncharted project at Sony Pictures. Dan Trachtenberg was revealed to have signed on for the film in January after Stranger Things director Shawn Levy left the project. The studio will once again search for a new director to take over the helm.

The Uncharted video game adaptation is based on the highly successful video game franchise from Naughtydog. The film is set to be a prequel for the treasure hunter that takes influence from a sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The story focuses on a young Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and his first encounter with the fortune seeker and businessman Victor Sullivan aka Sully, who will later become a father figure to the adventurer, and chronicle young Nathan as he grows into the adventure fans are familiar with. Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Rafe Judkins wrote a recent draft of the script.

Production on Sony’s Uncharted film has been struggling to get underway since long before Tom Holland was cast as Nathan Drake. Nathan Fillion was once rumored to star before Mark Wahlberg was in the mix with a script being developed by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook). The project has seen many filmmakers come and go since. Seth Gordon (Baywatch) and Neil Burger (Divergent) were once attached before Levy signed on to helm the film with a draft of the script penned by Joe Carnahan (The Grey). Carnahan described the script as an R-rated take that remained faithful to the adult language used in the games. However, the studio opted to rework this take on the project after seeing a cut of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Sony’s Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland is currently slated to be released in theaters on December 18, 2020. The film is being produced by Sony PlayStation Productions, with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan producing alongside Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad. NaughtyDog is not involved with the project.
