Black Panther Danai Gurira Oscars Disney Marvel

In a recent interview, Black Panther star, Danai Gurira, talked a bit about the film’s Oscar buzz and what expectations they had while making the film.

During the interview, Gurira talked about the mindset of the cast and crew while filming Black Panther. According to her, however, potential Oscars were the furthest thing from their minds. She was, however, aware that this was a film that would be important to a lot of people:

“My mind did not quite get there. We did know that there definitely was a hunger for this type of story. We had it. Growing up you want to see superheroes who look like yourself. That’s the whole point. As a kid you want to see something or someone who looks like you.

We understood there was a responsibility upon us to tell this story and to celebrate the fact it was actually happening.”

From the look of things, the the cast and crew for Black Panther had their priorities in the right place.

Since the film debuted earlier this year, it has gone on to become one of the years biggest hits. With a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 97%, it is, so far the best reviewed superhero film of the year and the biggest earner domestically, with a $700M haul in the United States. It is currently the second highest earner of the year worldwide with  $1.3B haul. It has since generated a lot of Oscar buzz with many anticipating that it will be the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. But for now, all we can do is wait and see.
