‘Daredevil’ Writer Thought Marvel Netflix Series Was ‘Too Big To Fail’

Daredevil writer Tamara Becher-Wilkinson has given her reaction to Netflix’s decision to cancel Marvel’s Daredevil which sent shockwaves through the Marvel fan community last week.

Speaking with io9, Becher-Wilkinson opened up regarding the cancelation of the series, which she thinks doesn’t bode well for the remaining series left on the streaming service:

“If I was a betting woman, you know, my guess is that it’s the end of the Marvel universe on Netflix.”

Netflix officially canceled the hit superhero series last week, about one month after the series’ critically acclaimed third season made its debut and after both Iron Fist and Luke Cage were canceled after their respective second seasons in October.

Becher-Wilkinson described the experience of being in the writer’s room, which was in the middle of planning a fourth season’s development as the storyline had been pitched. Becher-Wilkinson was ironing out the writing schedule when the writers found out the fourth season wasn’t going to happen:

“[Showrunner Erik Oleson] got a call asking him to go down to see the Marvel executives, and I jokingly went ‘Ooooooooh,’ like a third grader does when someone gets called to a principal’s office. Then, he waited for everybody to gather back in the writers’ room and he said, ‘Netflix has decided not to move forward with season four.’ And that’s all I remember, you know. I kind of missed the details because I was, like, so surprised.”

She also shared how surprised she was that the series had been canceled after the third season debuted to such rave reviews from critics and fans of the series:

“The reviews were so overwhelmingly positive that I thought there was no way they would cancel it. I don’t know how well it does on Netflix or anything like that…[but] it was surprising to me they would cancel something that was so well received. I thought it was too big to fail.”

Daredevil Season 3 stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Wilson Bethel, Jay Ali, and Lesley Ann Warren.

Missing for months, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reemerges a broken man, putting into question his future as both vigilante Daredevil and lawyer Matthew Murdock. But when his archenemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is released from prison, Matt must choose between hiding from the world, or embracing his destiny as a hero.

Daredevil Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we learn it.
