Fox’s Dark Phoenix is currently on track to take the top spot at the worldwide box office with a $170 million-plus debut.
While the current iteration of the X-Men film series is set to conclude with the release of Dark Phoenix, the second adaptation of the eponymous comic book saga is on track debut as the runner-up at the domestic box office with $50M-$55M. However, Dark Phoenix is expected to rise to the top of the global box office with an opening weekend gross of at least $170 million.
Roughly 50% of Dark Phoenix‘s projected $120 million overseas debut is expected to come from China, where tracking indicates the X-Men film will earn $50M-$60M. However, with an estimated budget of $200 million, Dark Phoenix could potentially become the second box office bomb of the summer if the negative reviews impact its financial intake down the line.
How much do you think Dark Phoenix can earn this weekend? Will you head out to see the latest X-Men film or are you passing on it? Let us know below!
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix will be released in theaters on June 7, 2019.
