During an interview with Screen Rant, Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg commented on having a sense of how the film connects to ending of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
After serving as a producer of the X-Men films since First Class, Simon Kinberg will make his feature film directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, the franchise’s second attempt at adapting the comic book saga of the same name. Of course, Dark Phoenix is set to conclude the current iteration of the X-Men before Marvel Studios’ presumably reboots the film series and Simon Kinberg revealed he does have a sense of how the upcoming film will connect to ending of Days of Future Past, which marked the lastย time audiences saw many of the older versions of the characters:
“I have some sense of it, yes, because I always feel as though I’m sort of responsible for the architecture of this and making sure that it all lines up. So I do have some sense of it, but I really did imagine this movie, in truth, as the culmination of this cycle of X-Men films and so I wasn’t really thinking past this film other than wanting to make sure that the logic was all sound.”
Simon Kinberg also stated the ending ofย Days of Future Pastย was crafted in part to grant him to change to retell the Dark Phoenix saga after the critically lambasted effort in X-Men: The Last Stand:
“I actually would say that theย Dark Phoenixย idea was was set up in the end ofย Days of Future Past. In changing the timeline ofย Days of Future Past, part of the reason I did that was I wanted a chance to tell theย Dark Phoenixย story in a more fulsome way where it’s really like the fullย Dark Phoenixย story and focuses on Jean’s story different thanย X-Men: The Last Stand.”
