Fans of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series have been anxiously awaiting the film adaptation’s release date following delays. Now, in an interview with Fandango’s Erik Davis, star Matthew McConaughey addressed The Dark Tower‘s religious parallels and offered fans a taste of what they can expect to see in the film.

McConaughey discussed the film’s Christian parallels and teased a showdown between his character and Idris Elba’s Gunslinger.

“It’s a dark tale of Christianity, it is. The epic, mythical battle of good versus evil. There’s multiple worlds happening, that you can inhabit simultaneously and you will see myself, Walter, and Idris, The Gunslinger, go head to head.”

Fans of Stephen King’s work will probably not be surprised by McConaughey’s comparison, as the authors novels often contain religious references and themes.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Katheryn Winnick, Jackie Earle Haley, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Michael Barbieri and Claudia Kim.

The Dark Tower will be released in  theaters on July 28, 2017.
