A huge bit of information was slyly revealed during Rogue One, the location of Darth Vader’s castle. In the film, every new planet is named except for the home of Darth Vader– yet this is because we’ve already been familiarized with this planet.
In the art book released alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the planet Darth Vader resides on is confirmed to be Mustafar. Fans may recognize Mustafar as the planet where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker dueled during Revenge of the Sith. Kenobi beats Skywalker leaving him to die, and the planet represents the birthplace of Darth Vader.
In the Rogue One artbook, writer Gary Whitta explains why Vader chose the planet as his home.
“The fact that he has chosen to build his mausoleum here is a nod to the conflict in him, that he would go back to this place to reflect on what happened to the man he once was. At the same time, it’s also terrifying, and when he emerges with all of his armor, he’s Darth Vader.”
Pablo Hidalgo, a Lucasfilm executive, has put an even greater twist into Vader’s castle however and reveals the inclusion of Mustafar in the Star Wars Rebels season one finale was intentional.
“Vader’s personal abode is an obsidian tower on an inhospitable world. “It is the Emperor’s design that Vader lives in such an unforgiving environment. Vader’s attendant, Vanee, visits Vader as he meditates within a rejuvenation chamber. The stark, modern structure is built over an ancient castle full of dark secrets.”
