Following the conclusion of filming on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Drax actor Dave Bautista took to social media to bid an emotional farewell to the character.
James Gunn recently confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had wrapped production, marking the completion of the director’s Guardians trilogy. The first Guardians film released back in 2014 and since then the team of cosmic misfits have become an MCU staple, going on to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Gunn has said that the third Guardians movie will be the final appearance of the current team, though before then they will be seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney Plus.
Reflecting on the end of filming on Instagram, Dave Bautista shared an image of himself with Gunn and other Guardians cast members. While it is not clear whether some members of the current team of Guardians may return in future MCU films, Bautista has previously spoken about how he views Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the end for Drax and it sounds like this will be the case. He captioned the image: “Haven’t found the words yet. It ended so suddenly and I was on to my next film before I could process it all. End of a journey that changed my life.”
While fans still have two final appearances from Drax to look forward to, saying goodbye to the character who immediately endeared himself to audiences in his first appearance in 2014 is sure to be an emotional experience.
Dave Bautista will next appear as Drax, alongside the other Guardians, in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis for the Taika Waititi-directed film:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, Vol. 3 is written and directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji.
