David Ayer and Margot Robbie Defends Harley Quinn Outfits In ‘Suicide Squad’

Harley Quinn Margot Robbie Suicide Squad

Harley Quinn is known for being passionately and insanely connected to The Joker and for her over the top wardrobe. Quinn will be getting the live-action treatment in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad being played by Margot Robbie.

From the first images to the trailers, Robbie has been seen wearing iconic Quinn outfits and not everyone was sold.  Many called the outfits an “over sexualization” of the character.

Robbie opened up about her character’s clothing choices and explained that this is her style, not a need for attention.

“She’s wearing hot pants because they’re sparkly and fun.” Not due to her wanting “guys to look at her ass.”

While Robbie seems to have fully embraced the character of Quinn, her outfit choices haven’t crossed over into her everyday life.

“As Margot, no, I don’t like wearing that. I’m eating burgers at lunchtime, and then you go do a scene where you’re hosed down and soaking wet in a white T-shirt, it’s so clingy and you’re self-conscious about it.”

Director David Ayer also commented on the clothing that Quinn wears and explaining that it’s “part of the iconography.”

“I didn’t think denim overalls would be appropriate for that character.”

“It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?”

Suicide Squad comes out in theaters on August 5.
