In a heartfelt open letter, David Ayer blasted the studio cut of his 2016 film, Suicide Squad, and voiced his support for James Gunn’s new film.
David Ayer’s 2016 film, Suicide Squad is one that quickly became a controversial DC installment. Like Zack Snyder’s Justice League it was a film that was taken over by studio executives at the last minute and was reworked into something the director never intended it to be. The end result was a movie that was panned by critics and failed to make as much money as Warner Bros had projected. Following the news that Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League would be released on HBO Max, many hoped that David Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad would also see a release, despite the upcoming debut of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Early reactions to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have been universally positive and the film currently holds a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One film critic mentioned on Twitter that while watching the new film, he kept thinking that David Ayer should just give up the idea of seeing his cut released. Ayer responded with a lengthy open letter that went into his background, blasted the studio cut of Suicide Squad, and then went on to voice his support for Warner Bros, James Gunn, and his upcoming film. You can check out the synopsis for the James Gunn film below:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding the DC Universe as we learn it and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
