David Goyer’s ‘Krypton’ Gets Pilot Order At SyFy

UPDATE: 05/09/2016: SyFy has officially given the Krypton project a pilot order as Bill McGoldrick who is the Executive Vice President of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment said this in a statement today.

“KRYPTON is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe. In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”

In December 2014, SyFy was developing a Superman prequel series, Krypton, from The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer, which would tell the story of Kal-El’s grandfather and the bigger history for House of El. There has been very little development on it since then, except for a brief update from Goyer last year, but now it seems that things are moving forward for the project. The Wrap revealed today that SyFy has given the DC Comics drama a pilot order as they are closing in on a deal.

The project has also recruited Sleepy Hollow and Stargate SG-1 producer/writer Damian Kindler as executive producer and show-runner. Colm McCarthy, who has directed episodes of Murphy’s Law, Peaky Blinders, will be directing the Krypton pilot that was written by fellow executive producer Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time) and Goyer. Last year, Goyer revealed in an interview that Krypton will be taking place 200 years before the events of Man of Steel, which would make this DC TV show the first one to be connected to the DC Extended Universe, however that may have changed since then.

“It takes place 200 years before Man of Steel. We’re treating Krypton like it’s a historical piece. We look to previous cultures on Earth to model what that would be like.”

More news should be coming out soon as NBC Universal (which SyFy is part of) will be holding their Upfronts next month.

“Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.”
