In a recent interview at MoffettNathanson’s inaugural Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, expressed his admiration for James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios. Zaslav went as far as questioning why Gunn wasn’t chosen to lead the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, given his exceptional talent and deep knowledge of comic books.
David Zaslav emphasized the importance of having exceptional leadership within Warner Bros. Discovery, explaining, “What we tried to do is get really great leadership. The philosophy of our company is we don’t want people to go to meetings, we want the people to do the work.” He further elaborated on his relationship with James Gunn, highlighting the filmmaker’s accomplishments.
James Gunn is widely recognized for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which has become a major hit for Marvel. Zaslav expressed his happiness about this success, attributing it to Gunn’s remarkable skills as both a writer and director.
As Zaslav continued to reflect on his interaction with Gunn, he couldn’t help but wonder why Marvel had not entrusted him with the responsibility of leading their cinematic universe. Gunn’s extensive familiarity with comic book characters, cultivated throughout his entire life, made him a natural fit for the role of DC Studios co-head. Zaslav further praised Gunn’s recent work on Superman: Legacy, a project that the CEO personally read and was impressed by.
“This is the guy we want, and everybody wants to work with him,” Zaslav declared. While the idea of James Gunn helming the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be intriguing, it is essential to acknowledge the successful leadership and creative vision already in place. Marvel Studios, under the guidance of Kevin Feige, has achieved unprecedented success over the years, delivering a string of blockbuster hits.
James Gunn’s DC Universe Future
Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. James Gunn promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
