New details on the reason behind DC Universe’s decision to cancel Swamp Thing have been revealed.
Earlier today, it was confirmed DC Universe opted to cancel Swamp Thing less than a week after the series debuted on the streaming service. While the reason for the sudden cancelation was uncertain, Movies.com writer John Gholson shared details on the circumstances that led to Warner Bros. shutting down production in North Carolina and canceling Swamp Thing after just one season.
As Gholson recounts, North Carolina promised a tax rebate they were unable to deliver following a paperwork error. According to StarNewsOnline, Swamp Thing was eligible to receive up to $12 million from North Carolina’s film grant funding, which the state replenishes with $31 million each fiscal year. However, chairs of the House of Representatives’ appropriations committee reportedly opted to remove the grant’s upcoming $31 million in funding from the 2019-20 fiscal year budget after the N.C. Department of Commerce is said to have mistakenly told members of the committee the grant program still had $67 million sitting unused.
Furthermore, Deadline reports the new leadership at WarnerMedia was “not particularly high on Swamp Thing.” There is a solid chance the combination of this displeasure from the WarnerMedia bosses and the grant funding error’s impact on Swamp Thing‘s budget were the reason behind DC Universe’s decision to cancel the series.
