When Logan arrived in theaters, fans were treated to a Deadpool 2 teaser which featured the Merc with a Mouth’s failed attempt to save an elderly man from a mugging. As Deadpool struggled to put on the costume, the elderly man was shot and killed before the foul-mouthed hero could intervene. The circumstances surrounding the old man’s death prompted fans to theorize that the unnamed victim was actually Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben, a theory director David Leitch addressed during an interview with the Huffington Post.
Leitch played coy when asked if the old man in the teaser was Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben:
“That’s a really interesting question. I think that people should continue to theorize who that old man was.”
While an official connection between the Spider-Man and Deadpool cinematic universes is unlikely, by neither denying or confirming the identity of the elderly victim, David Leitch has probably ensured that the theory will live on for the foreseeable future. Directed by David Leitch and written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, the film stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapicic as Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin a.k.a. Colossus, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al and Jack Kesy.
The Deadpool sequel will be released in theaters on June 1, 2018.
