Deadpool 3 is in the works and Rhett Reese, one of the film’s writers, has discussed how the move to Marvel Studios has impacted the film’s journey towards production.
Deadpool had a troubled journey to the big screen. The Ryan Reynolds X-Men spinoff had been shelved by 20th Century Fox for over a decade, before leaked test footage saw a surge of fan interest that led to the film being greenlit. After delivering two crowd-pleasing installments, Deadpool is now in the hands of Marvel Studios, as a result of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
While Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has made it clear in the past that Deadpool 3 will remain R-rated, unlike other Marvel Studios projects, and will go ahead with star Ryan Reynolds, the film’s writers have revealed that the behind-the-scenes handover has naturally led to some delays.
When Is ‘Deadpool 3’ Coming?
In a recent interview with The Playlist, Rhett Reese, who is co-writing Deadpool 3 with Paul Wernick were asked about the delay in the third film’s release. Deadpool arrived in theaters in 2016, with Deadpool 2 following just two years later, in 2018. So far though, there has been no sign of Deadpool 3. Rhett Reese explained:
“We want to make it great. We’re in the laboratory working on it with Ryan Reynolds all the time, and we’re very much entertaining ourselves. So, hopefully, that translates and ultimately will entertain the world. But you know, it’s a marriage between Fox and Disney and it’s two different universes and it’s not easy. But it’s also a wonderful challenge and, you know, high-class problems to be able to merge those, those worlds. So, we’re, we’re enjoying it.”
Reese went on to explain how the team working on Deadpool 3 have had to adapt to working with Disney, but also emphasized the support they have received from the studio:
“Obviously, it’s like, it’s two completely different regimes, right? So, it’s two different bureaucracies. It was Fox, all these different people, and now it’s not those people anymore. It’s these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel’s been incredibly supportive. They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? […] It’s been nothing but, ‘how can we help you?’ ‘What from our universe would you like to use? How, how can we make your life easy?’ And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied ‘Deadpool.’ So they’re awesome, and now it’s up to us to come through and justify that faith.”
It sounds like the delays to Deadpool 3 are part and parcel of the huge behind-the-scenes shift that has taken place. However, it is also clear that Disney is not asking that the famously adult character be toned down for a typical MCU audience. The studio appears committed to delivering more of the Deadpool fans love.
Here is the synopsis for the previous film, Deadpool 2:
