The much anticipated animated film Death of Superman was always going to be something of a tragedy, though I can’t imagine most expected it to be in the form of an early leak of the full movie. The story follows that of Superman’s encounter and deadly battle with the monster Doomsday, well known in the comics for being the creature that actually killed the Man of Steel (only to be revived a few issues later). Unfortunately the film has been illegally released online less than a week before its July 24th release date.
It’s not all bad news; apparently the fan reaction online has been extremely positive, many of them comparing how the animated film does a far better job than the final act of the Warner Bros. movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was heavily criticized upon its released for cramming too many plot threads into a single movie and doing a disservice to the Death of Superman arc.
Here is the official synopsis for Death of Superman:
“When a hulking monster emerges from an underground resting place and begins a mindless rampage, the Justice League is quickly called in to stop the colossal force of nature. But it soon becomes apparent that only Superman can stand against the monstrosity that has been nicknamed Doomsday. Battling their way throughout America, the two fight to a standstill as they reach the heart of Metropolis. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever.”
Death of Superman features the voice talents of Jerry O’Connell as Superman, Rebecca Romijn as Lois Lane, Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Christopher Gorham as The Flash, Matt Lanter as Aquaman, Shemar Moore as Cyborg and Jason O’Mara as Batman, Rocky Caroll as Silas Stone and Patrick Fabian as Hank Henshaw.
Death of Superman will be released on Digital HD July 24th and on Blu-ray, DVD August 7th!
