‘The Defenders’: Krysten Ritter On “Reluctant” Team-Up

We got our first look at The Defenders earlier this week and it’s already looking pretty great.

Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter reveals some new details about where we find her character right before the team-up and how the aftermath of her experiences have changed her life, but haven’t necessarily changed her outlook on it.

“She’s still dealing with the aftermath of Kilgrave, and now she’s dealing with ‘success’ — and not well. People want her to work for them, she’s getting a lot of business, and she’s not ready for any of that. She hasn’t changed, but her environment has, and there’s no handbook for how to exist in a world where you are now popular.”

Jessica Jones isn’t exactly looking to be in the spotlight, either, and showrunner Marco Ramirez says of all the team members, Jessica is the one who isn’t all gung-ho about it.

“She’s gloriously the most reluctant hero in the world. She’s going to have to let three men into her life who she doesn’t 100 percent trust.”

Still, Jessica is on the team. Most of the characters would have already interacted at some point by the time the series debuts in the summer. Jessica and Luke Cage were romantically involved, for example.

Asked to describe the relationship Jessica has with Daredevil, Ritter says that the dynamic is very “cat-and-mouse.”

“It switches back and forth, to be honest. No one’s best friends in all of the Defenders. This is a reluctant team-up.”

Marvel’s The Defenders follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.
