Luke Cage is the man to call when you want to put together a team of people who will defend the city. Luke will fight alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist in Marvel Netflix’s The Defenders later this year.
While Jessica Jones’ Krysten Ritter called their team-up a “reluctant” one, Luke Cage’s Mike Colter says that his character will be “the conciliator” of the group when things get a little too tense between them.
Colter is “the guy, the wisdom. If you want to make sure something works, run it up the flagpole.”
The Defenders showrunner Marco Ramirez agrees with this assessment of Colter’s character. “Luke is someone who’s, in a very mature way, compartmentalized his life,” Ramirez says.
Luke wound up back in prison at the end of the first season of the show. So how will he be teaming up with everyone else. Colter assures that Luke will be out and about in no time and that he’ll also have a “different approach to life” once he’s out.
“It’s safe to say Cage is not going to spend the entire season of The Defenders behind bars. He’s been able to come clean and deal with his past… The difficulty with Cage [in the first season] is that he has this secret, he has this thing that he’s been trying to run away from and deal with, and that’s a big burden to bear. That weighs on you, that changes who you are as a person. Now that that’s out of the way, I think we can give him a different approach to life.”
Aside from taking a new approach to his life, Luke Cage will also serve as a kind of mentor to Danny Rand, aka Iron First. Colter says their budding friendship is a “cool combination” of what they each bring to the table.
“He’s a young guy. There’s an exuberance that Iron Fist comes with that Luke Cage wants to temper a bit. It can’t help but have a wisdom-versus-youth quality… Danny comes out like a bull in a china shop in some ways, and I think Luke has seen the world and knows certain things. It’s a cool combination that’ll work out.”
The Defenders also stars Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Finn Jones as Iron Fist, and Sigourney Weaver as Alexandra, as well as several characters from all four shows. The series will premiere on Netflix at some point in 2017.
